WAIMAKARIRI RIVER UPDATE

300 – 400mm of rain has fallen in the upper Waimak catchment in the last two days and is forecast to continue. The river flow is expected to increase throughout today and into tomorrow. Flood warnings are in place.

All Irrigation water orders will be cancelled by WIL until further notice.

We are monitoring the situation overnight and will keep you updated as this event unfolds. We will be reviewing the rainfall and river levels regularly with the intention to open for full irrigation supply as soon as we can.

The Waimakariri Irrigation Ltd Scheme is a shareholder-owned cooperative company with consent to take water 11.041 cumecs from the Waimakariri River. Water is drawn from the Waimakariri River at Browns Rock for distribution through 1,100 kilometres of open race channels to supply around 200 shareholders. The Scheme supplies farms covering approximately 30,000 ha within an overall area of 78,000 ha and is located between the Waimakariri and the Ashley Rivers and between Oxford and Rangiora townships.
