BROWNS ROCK INTAKE CLOSURE:

Due to continued rainfall in the catchment ECAN have flood warnings in place for the Waimakariri River.

The intake gates were shut down at 3.30pm this afternoon and the river in the upper catchment is currently flowing around 4000m3/sec. at Esk. This is a substantial flow and risk of out of river breaches could occur.
Recorded on one measuring site 74mm fell in 1 hour and near enough to 250mm in a 4 hour period this morning.

We will update you as soon as the intake is able to be re-opened.

The Waimakariri Irrigation Ltd Scheme is a shareholder-owned cooperative company with consent to take water 11.041 cumecs from the Waimakariri River. Water is drawn from the Waimakariri River at Browns Rock for distribution through 1,100 kilometres of open race channels to supply around 200 shareholders. The Scheme supplies farms covering approximately 30,000 ha within an overall area of 78,000 ha and is located between the Waimakariri and the Ashley Rivers and between Oxford and Rangiora townships.
