Due to continued rainfall in the catchment ECAN have flood warnings in place for the Waimakariri River.
The Water Scheme intake gates will remain closed until further notice.
Rain has continued to fall in the headwaters of our alpine catchments and is forecast to continue into this evening. Rainfall amounts so far 130mm at Carrington, 100mm at Arthurs Pass and 100mm at Mt Byrne. This combined with unpredictable snow melt has triggered the decision to close the intake.
We also have a major buffer pond embankment lining project downstream of the intake. This was also taken into consideration. Everyone has been working hard to keep the project on track, so we do not want any unwanted issues arising overnight at the intake.
We will update you as soon as the intake is able to be re-opened.
